Beginning guitar in the elementary and middle school classroom.
Limited Capacity seats available

This session is intended for classroom teachers who are already running a guitar program at their school, or who may be interested in starting one. In this one-hour session I will address the following aspects of teaching guitar to students in elementary and middle school:

• How to introduce young students to playing the guitar
• Technical and warm-up exercises for plucking and fretting
• Use of technical exercises to help students calm down, focus and work as a team
• Easing into difficult parts gradually and “chunking” parts
• Learning simple, monophonic riffs
• Layering of levels of difficulty to accommodate students with different technical abilities
• Learning partial chords as preparation for learning full open chords
• Use of note labels on neck of guitar
• Use of visual aids (Smartboard, tablature, lightboard)
• Use of iPad apps (Garage Band, Guitar Toolkit, Chord Bank, Songster)

10 unamplified electric guitars will be provided for participants to join in and play. Participants are welcome to bring a guitar of their own.
