Arts in Action: Community art as catalysts for social change through children’s creative collaborative song writing
Limited Capacity seats available

This workshop will look at a project at Southridge School in which first-year ukulele players collaborated on ideas inspired by art that was part of the Biennale Public Art Exhibition. These grade six students wrote an original song complete with chords and lyrics that examined the ‘big ideas’ of their chosen piece. Students wrote their songs using any process that worked for them, supported by their teacher, a singer-songwriter mentor, and their peers. Students kept ongoing Arts Developmental Workbooks that documented their process and included reflections on their experience. Participants in this workshop will learn about the project (which could be used with any group of students and any instruments), see an example of a student original composition, and receive copies of student handouts. A discussion on transformative arts engagement for educators will then take place in which participants can share examples of what they are doing in their own classrooms to put the arts into action.

How to incorporate leadership programs into your school's schedule and curriculum.
Limited Capacity seats available

In the last three years, St. George's has made steady progress in creating everyday leadership opportunities for students at the senior school. We will be focusing on our Grade 8 Leadership course and our Grade 10 leadership camp but will include other areas that have been developed, such as the Grade 8 Reading Buddies program, recent changes to our formal 8-10 leadership structure and general student run and focused opportunities. The hope for this session is that those attending will also share leadership programs that are working well at their schools.

FULL - NO FURTHER SPACE - limited to 34: Simulation Math Game: A Creative way to Teach Number Sense
Limited Capacity seats available

PLEASE NOTE THE MAXIMUM IS 34 - PLEASE CHOOSE AGAIN IF YOU'RE ON THE WAITLIST

Does 'math make sense' not always make sense to your students? Want to try something fresh in mathematics? This summer, I set out to change my first math unit ('Number Sense') to create a more student-centered, interactive approach. I developed a simulation math game that has students practicing all of my target concepts in an engaging, team game setting. It invovles trading and gathering resources, purchasing items, and balancing your budget. We had such a great week and a half playing the game that I'd like to take the opportunity to share it with anyone who may find it useful for their own classrooms. We will quickly discuss the mathematical concepts it teaches/assesses and end with a reflection on what may work for our own students, but most of the workshop will be spent playing the game. Come play with us!

Math Pickle for Senior Students
Limited Capacity seats available

Gordon Hamilton will present from Calgary at the ISABC Conference.   He presented 2 years ago at Mulgrave and participants acclaimed his input as both inspirational - and transformational for their teaching.

Work selfishly alone or together with your neighbour discovering curricular puzzles, games and unsolved problems that deserve their day in front of every student.  This class will include the following highlights:

Unfair Thrones - An original puzzle to inspire students with fractions.  It got MathPickle into the New York Times last November - I'm very happy with how it works in class.
Twin Prime Conjecture - Euclid posed this over two millennia ago, yet it is only in the last year that we've managed to make real strides into proving it.  There are some accessible classroom discoveries that make this conjecture essential in every div 3 curriculum.
Prime Number Catacombs (William Paulsen, 2000) - One of my biggest joys of the last few years was discovering William Paulsen's pedagogic gem.  It is best introduced when students are learning about exponents and powers.MathPickle

ISABC Public Square #StudentVoice
Limited Capacity seats available

This session is a follow-up on last year's successful inclusion of students as critical partners in our collaborative conversations on 21C teaching, learning and community engagement. The core participants for this session will be student leaders drawn from ISABC schools with the support of the Service Learning & Student Engagement Educators (SEED) group. Students are challenged to develop a preliminary action plan on how to build stronger community and sustainable connections amongst ISABC schools, particularly in the realm of community engagement and service. The goal is to leave the forum with a student action-plan across schools that goes beyond last year's foundations. This plan will be presented to SEED members and others who are interested at a 'working lunch' that day from 12.40-1.30pm.

The session coordinated by ISABC school representatives Antony Wilson (Mulgrave School), Carrie Hughes-Grant (Meadowridge), Daryl Weaver (Southridge) and Rick Campanella (Stratford Hall) and others. We hope this developing ISABC #studentvoice forum will shape our 'other' conversations on what matters in our schools and beyond.

Doctopus and Goobric - taking control of your students' Google documents and giving feedback online
Limited Capacity seats available

Many schools are now using G.A.F.E. (Google Apps for Education) to support their students' computer access and management issues. As a result, teachers are faced with the problem of how to manage the plethora of shared and emailed documents. Andrew Stillman wrote a script to help teachers effectively manage and control access to their students' documents called Doctopus as well as a script for attaching a rubric to the students' document, called Goobric. Participants will learn how to use Doctopus and Goobric, as well as how to unleash the power of the sophisticated sharing technology that GAFE offers while the teacher still maintains control over the documents sent out. Participants will also witness how the quality of their feedback will improve by using Goobric which allows teachers to seamlessly keep track of all their feedback, from numerical to text comments, as it is automatically copied into the "control centre" spreadsheet for the assignment. Once mastered, Doctopus will also enable teachers to easily and subtly differentiate as well as assign shared group work that fosters cooperative learning.

Off-Site @ York House School - A pedagogical sharing session for senior school art teachers
Limited Capacity seats available

Think back to when you studied for your teaching qualification……..
How great was it to be surrounded by wannabe teachers collaborating and sharing ideas every day?! Many of us now work in departments where there may be just one other art teacher, or perhaps you work alone.
This full day workshop held at York House School will focus on two areas; sharing curriculum ideas, and discussing the role of the art educator in exhibition curating. The day will culminate in teachers working together to create an exhibition of student and teacher artwork from the participating independent schools. This exhibition will be on display at York House School for the month of February.

Our students communicate with us through their behaviour almost as much as, or even more than with their actual voices. By paying attention to the non-verbal cues, we can understand our students better and be better able to tend to their needs. With the simple act of getting curious, we invite students to be full participants in their own lives and take greater responsibility for the choices they make, and ultimately become better communicators.

Creative Cinema for Critical Thinking
How do we inspire students to demonstrate both creativity and critical thinking? One way is to kick up video production a notch by encouraging augmentation - the careful addition of the “meta”. In this hands-on presentation/ workshop we’ll be exploring Web tools and apps that allow students to add rich layers to their visual and audio creations. Augmentation with external links, multi-media, and hypertext makes both original work and appropriated resources more “meaty”. Most tools allow for remix, collaboration, and crowdsourcing - key “21st century” skills. Another effective digital storytelling technique is stop-motion animation. Stop motion enhances the beauty of the analog - the “old school” hand-drawn, hand-constructed and hand-written elements we are so nostalgic about. Films of this type can be quite poignant and truly allow students a chance to demonstrate their knowledge and creativity, while honing skills such as collaboration and troubleshooting / divergent thinking. This session offers a myriad of tips and exemplars (both student and professional) of various types of stop motion as well as an opportunity to practice and produce a project first-hand. Experience each through play and experimentation, and showcase at least two of your creations with our group. These techniques are highly adaptable and applicable to almost any age and discipline. (*laptop and mobile device required, and you will be asked to download a stop-motion app) Tools used: Popcornmaker, TED Ed, Weavly, YouTube, Thinglink, Soundcloud, Touchcast, Stop-Motion Pro App

Meaningful Music Education for Middle Years Students: The Musical Futures Project in action at Southridge School
This workshop will share the process that Southridge School undertook to initiate an innovative initiative from the UK called “Musical Futures” with the grade 7 beginning band classes. In phase one, the students formed friendship groups and worked collaboratively to learn to play a song of their choice by “ear” without the use of notation or direct instruction. The objective was to have the students emulate the real-life practices of many beginning popular musicians. In phase two, the students took part in a group inquiry project that engaged them in thinking about their experience working with their band, and how this learning compared with other ways they learn music. The objective of phase two was to allow students to explore issues such as authenticity, repetition, dedication and future musical opportunities. Participants in this workshop will learn more about this initiative at Southridge, will watch a video clip of the unit in action, will receive copies of student handouts, and will have the chance to ask questions and share related ideas.

Teaching English in the 21st century - inquiry and engagement
Limited Capacity seats available

English language skills are changing! Memorization, reading for understanding and written analysis are traditional measures of concepts in the English classroom. While these skills are still important, they have become less relevant with the internet and our students' abilities to access information at their fingertips. How do we engage our students in meaningful discussions, activities and writing exercises in the 21st century?

This workshop will introduce key concepts around using inquiry in the English classroom, provide specific strategies and lesson ideas, and examine student samples and reflections. Main focus areas include: higher-level Bloom's taxonomy (synthesis and evaluation) and representing understanding in a variety of ways (creativity, multiple literacies and giving students choice).

FULL - EXPANDED TO MAXIMUM at 37: Levelling the Playing Field with the iPad
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will demonstrate how organizing, creating, curating, and sharing on the iPad can help to level the playing field for students who learn differently (so, all students!). We will attempt to answer the question, "Why the iPad" and give evidence to support our decision to go 1:1 in our department at Collingwood. In addition, we will discuss and give hands-on examples of how the device itself and how specific apps empower kids to become successful and confident learners, despite their learning style. Participants will come away with our 'backpack' of apps we think are essential in our humanities and math classes.

Math Pickle for the Middle Years
Limited Capacity seats available

Gordon Hamilton will be coming from Calgary to present at the ISABC Conference.

Integral Fission - There are multiple prime factorization trees possible for decomposing a composite number into its prime factors.  Here, we introduce additional rules so that only one of these prime factorization trees become acceptable.  This allows us to explore and create many fun puzzles.

Collatz Conjecture (Lothar Collatz, 1937) - There is no excuse for students learning multiplication not to be exposed to this unsolved problem.  It belongs in all curricular worldwide.

Fractured Fraction - This puzzle inspires students with equivalent fractions.  It is one of the most aesthetically pleasing of MathPickle puzzles and that's important because probably 10-15% of students can be pulled into math through beauty.

Perudo or Liars Dice - At 500 years old, it is the most underestimated of the historic games.  It can unapologetically be mentioned in the same breath as go, backgammon or chess.

21st Century Collaboration: a cross-school teaching community
Limited Capacity seats available

As teachers, we often collaborate within grade levels or departments: our own school communities. This workshop will explore technology-based collaboration between individuals in different independent schools. Our goal is to create a community of science teachers across ISABC who feel comfortable collaborating with each other and troubleshooting our teaching & learning needs and methods. We will be describing our experience through middle school science teaching, but we welcome all science teachers.

In a short session we will describe a collaboration between two individual science teachers in separate schools over the past three years. We will tell you our story and suggest ideas to share science lessons between ISA schools that are fun, engaging, and successful. A portion of the workshop will be spent creating this collaboration community and providing you with new resources.

The Past is Not a Foreign Country: Social Studies 7 in the 21 Century
Limited Capacity seats available

In his pervasive book, The Past is A Foreign Country, David Lowenthal makes a compelling argument about how the past influences the present. In this workshop, I will share my experience of teaching Social Studies 7 over 14 years, from its roots in the 20th century, to its present form in the 21 Century. My main theme is that studying our past does not mean travel to a foreign country, which, while interesting, is impractical for contemporary teaching and boys’ learning. As part of the“21 Century” strategies I am trying out these days, I will outline how I don’t use a binder or a textbook anymore with my students, how I utilize our school’s online tool called the “HUB”, and how a gaming platform like Minecraft can be a good teaching tool in Social Studies – all derived from an Ancient Civilizations curriculum which is very much a foreign country to students. My hope is to encourage thinking about your Social Studies program amidst the paradigm shift in education. I will finish up the workshop by taking you through a personal reflection of your Social Studies program in relation to the themes of our professional day.

Students as Creators of Content - Moving Beyond Flipped Learning
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will summarize the findings of a professional inquiry into flipped and blended learning. Presenters will share their insights on the limitations of conventional notions of flipped or blended learning and introduce a taxonomy of content as well as the need for a new grammar of assessment. Central to the presentation will be the notion of using technology to move students along a continuum from traditional consumers of content to creators of content. The benefits to student learning are increased personalisation, activation and higher order processing. The presentation will be followed with a question and answer session and a discussion on how teachers can implement the findings in their classrooms.

The Primitive Project – a discussion on creating memorable cross-curricular experiences
Limited Capacity seats available

Over the past 2 years, I have been bringing a deer hide into the Grade 7 classroom to use with my students as part of a Primitive Project. The goal is to create a cross-curricular, hands-on experience that the students will never forget. The kids end up taking the hide from being the pelt of a deer to becoming material (buckskin) that they can work with in an Art project. With the Primitive Project, the students also learn about food preservation methods by creating venison jerky, and get a chance to work together in groups to create friction fire kits with which they start fires. This project ends up tying Science (ecosystems, chemistry), Social Studies (ancient civilizations), and Art together with the added discussion of where food/leather comes from, thrown in.

In this session, we will talk about attempts to make learning a hands-on experience, and ways in which to build projects that are cross-curricular. We will discuss what is it like to take the risk of starting a project with which you may have little or no experience. Participants will have a chance observe/work with deer hides a multiple stages of completeness (you don't have to get your hands messy - but you can if you want to!). The take away from this session will hopefully involve building excitement about bringing your own hands-on, cross-curricular project into your classroom.
