Does 'math make sense' not always make sense to your students? Want to try something fresh in mathematics? This summer, I set out to change my first math unit ('Number Sense') to create a more student-centered, interactive approach. I developed a simulation math game that has students practicing all of my target concepts in an engaging, team game setting. It invovles trading and gathering resources, purchasing items, and balancing your budget. We had such a great week and a half playing the game that I'd like to take the opportunity to share it with anyone who may find it useful for their own classrooms. We will quickly discuss the mathematical concepts it teaches/assesses and end with a reflection on what may work for our own students, but most of the workshop will be spent playing the game. Come play with us!
